About wireless charging and Qi
What is wireless charging?
Wireless charging means, as the name suggests, you no longer need to plug a cable into your device to charge it. Simply placing it face up on a special mat or tabletop is enough to start charging up your device’s battery.
What is ‘Qi’ wireless charging?
Qi (pronounced: ‘’chee’’) is a global standard like Bluetooth, NFC, USB and WIFI. Its name comes from the Asian philosophy and means ‘’vital energy’’, an intangible flow of power. The idea behind Qi is simple: all devices with the Qi logo will be compatible with all Qi chargers.
What is Qi-certified?
Products using the Qi standard must be tested rigorously to help ensure safety, interoperability and energy efficiency. Only products that have passed these independent laboratory tests can use the Qi logo and are considered “Qi-certified”. WERZALIT wireless charging tabletops are Qi certified.
What is the Wireless Power Consortium?
The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) is a group of leading companies that cooperate in continuously defining, maintaining and developing the Qi standard for wireless charging. https://www.wirelesspowerconsortium.com/
How does wireless charging work with a phone?
Wireless charging works by transferring energy from the charger to a receiver in the back of the phone via electromagnetic induction. The charger uses an induction coil to create an alternating electromagnetic field, which the receiver coil in the phone converts back into electricity to be fed into the battery. They must be correctly aligned over the top of each other, although a set orientation is not necessary. Rechargeable toothbrushes and other bathroom accessories have used inductive charging since the 1990s.
Does the phone heat up?
Most phones and some chargers heat up slightly on the back where the wireless charging is taking place. Smartphones also typically heat up slightly when being charged via cable, so the difference is small in most cases. There is not anything to worry about.
Is wireless charging faster or slower than cabled charging?
It’s all about power. A 5W wireless charging system can deliver up to 5W of power to the battery of your phone. This is like a 5V/1A USB outlet and therefore it’s just as fast as wired charging. In general, it depends on the amount of power delivered to the phone. With cabled charging, the amount of power is dependent on the type and power rating of the adapter in combination with the capabilities of the phone. For wireless charging it is actually the same; a 15W charger has the capabilities to charge your phone faster than a 5W charger, but this also depends on the amount of power your phone can handle.
Is wireless charging going to be a big thing? What is the future?
While the standards for wireless charging have been in flux for years, now that most devices either support multiple standards or at least Qi, wireless charging is likely to become a standard part of smartphones. Apple’s adoption of Qi is likely to make it the primary standard going forward.
I have a case on my phone, does it interfere with my phone’s wireless charging capabilities?
Using a case on your phone shouldn’t interfere with its wireless charging capabilities. In fact, to make your phone wireless charging compatible, we even recommend that you use a case to hold the receiver in place. Wireless charging works best with slim, flexible cases so that the transmitter and receiver can connect easily.
When will we see Qi installed more widely in public places?
It’s hard to predict when Qi will reach the point of ubiquity that WiFi has achieved. It depends on the percentage of people that have a Qi-Certified phone. With almost all major smartphone manufacturers now offering Qi-Certified models, we expect to see that percentage continue to grow. Already, a number of WPC members are installing Qi-Certified chargers in thousands of restaurants, hotels, public transportation, coffee shops and many other venues around the world and WPC expects this trend to continue.
Where can I find information on trends?

I’ve heard that wireless charging can damage a phone’s battery. Is that true?
Lithium battery capacity typically decreases as the cycle number increases. There are several factors that can decrease overall battery life, including charge cycles. However, according to public research, a battery’s lifetime actually increases by 4x when the depth of discharge – or amount that the battery is drained – is limited to 50%, rather than 100%. In other words, by continually topping up the phone battery during the day, as you might do with Qi wireless charging, and not letting your phone battery dip below 50%, you can actually increase the lifespan of your battery.
Which devices use wireless charging?
There are hundreds of phones, and other products such as smartwatches, earbuds, tablets which can be wirelessly charged. The Wireless Power Consortium keeps a full list of both wireless chargers and chargeable devices: https://www.wirelesspowerconsortium.com/products
